And Ninety-Nine Knives Gleamed In The Firelight | ~27yo Vashoth Mage

(But you can just call them Knives.) 

But, yes!! I’ve talked a few times about wanting a pop music bard type of character, but boy! Did that idea finally solidify in my mind this week. I’ve never really had a character come close to even challenging Mir as my canon Inquisitor but Knives is definitely toeing the line. I love them.

(And it’s not just because I really dig the idea of wisps helping with musical performances~)

So! Knives! Their full first name is ‘And Ninety-Nine Knives Gleamed in The Firelight’ though just Knives is plenty fine by them. They’re a Vashoth mage, a bit of abomination, a bit of a bard and mostly a kid who’s absolutely in love with music. They were adopted by a former Tamarassan and ex Ben-Hassrath (Teth’a and Kabethari) where they found them near a ruined temple in Seheron. Their origins are a bit of a mystery, given the pair didn’t have much time to investigate why is some six year old was just chilling in some ruins alone, but ‘tis life. They grew up mostly in Rivain, their moms figuring it was the safest bet for a pair of Tal-Vashoth raising a Vashoth mage.

Especially after they found out they were an abomination too. Knives honestly has no real memories of what was it like being just themself. It’s always felt like another has been inside of them, and they’re not really bothered by that. Like, it’s all they really know and they quite like his Spirit buddy! It’s one of Creativity and really, what’s better than spending an entire lifetime in pure collaboration with another equally as passionate soul? Knives is like ‘heck yes, let’s go make another tune! :D!’

And, really. It’s been like a solid two decades of co-ownership and collaboration over his body so it’s not likely to change any time soon. Knives is happy with their arrangement and snickers a lot when they listen to anyone try to talk possession and abominations around them.

And like I mentioned earlier, they really likes incorporating wisps into their performances too, letting them mimic noises and lines so they can better articulate the music that flows out of them. Sadly, they know a lot of people (outside of Rivain at least) are spooked by them all the same, so those performances are normally limited to more private shows. Shame, really.

While I don’t think they would be a good Inquisitor (mainly because my headcanon the Breach would’ve sever their connection with Creativity and that would’ve made him bitter as fuck), I can definitely see them being in the Inquisition. Both his moms work for a group called Arisataa, which helps Qunari leave the Qun and also helps them adjusted to a life without the Qun too. In my canon play-through, Teth’a offers to help the Inquisition and comes to Skyhold with one of her kids. So, basically Knives. They’d be a bit of a bard, playing songs and gathering information for both Arisataa and the Inquisition. 

I haven’t gotten to Skyhold yet, but I’m close! I imagine they’d be pretty buddy-buddy with Cole, because cute friendships will always slay my heart~! 

But, yeah. They’re a little charmer and I always like writing characters with a serious love for music and having a spirit of Creativity chilling inside seems just too fun not to explore further. o: Idk, but I quite like Knives so far. They’ve been fun, I just need to work out a design for them now. I’ve like half way there (hence the collage of images instead of doodles, lol).
